The State of Origin Rugby League 2015 series will be the 35th time series
the annual best-of-three rugby league series between the Queensland
Maroons and New South Wales Blues rugby league teams is played entirely
under ‘state of origin’ rules(1980 and 1981 were only 1 game series). It
will be the third series to be administered by the Australian Rugby
League Commission which was created in a major restructure of the
sport’s administration in Australia.This series will see one game played in each of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, with Game II to be
played at the 100,024 capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground, while the venues for Games I and III are
still to be decided.Former Canberra, Queensland and Australian captain Mal Meninga will remain as coach of the
Queensland side, whose eight-year State of Origin series winning streak was ended by New South Wales
last year. The Blues will be coached by former Canberra, NSW and Australia captain Laurie Daley for
a third consecutive year.The full Queensland and New South Wales teams for the 2015 State of Origin series will be on this
page as soon as they are announced. The teams are traditionally announced on the Monday and Tuesday
evenings the week prior to the Origin fixtures.
Currently, the NSW team is in some flux, with Bulldogs and NSW halves Trent Hodkinson and Josh
Reynolds not displaying the kind of form that saw them win Origin selection in 2014. Injuries to
other key players has put them either in doubt or out for the series, including South Sydney’s Adam
Reynolds, who showed great form in early rounds. It is likely that some combination of Mitchell
Pearce, James Maloney, Hodkinson and Reynolds will make up the NSW halves pairing.
After a strong showing in City-Country, Maloney and Pearce could be the frontrunners for the two
positions.
Greg Bird is also in doubt for the Origin series, having been charged by the judiciary for a lifting
tackle in the Anzac Test.
For Queensland, Justin Hodges has made a welcome return to the Broncos after a hamstring injury, and
Will Chambers’ selection in the Australian Kangaroos only strengthens their backline stocks.
Luke Keary, Tepai Moeroa and James Roberts are all in the frame for NSW selection after impressive
starts to the season, though Keary has pulled out of the City Origin side, so is likely to not be a
contender.
2014 NSW captain Paul Gallen has also backed St George Illawarra fullback Josh Dugan to fill the
boots of the departed Jarryd Hayne, who is currently training with the San Francisco 49ers in the
NFL.
